Treñas urges Iloilo youth to join public service

Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas wants more young Ilonggos to take part in local governance, saying the youth should not only be affected by community problems but should also help find solutions.

Treñas made the call as the city launched its “G Na Youth: G na G sa Public Service” youth leadership training, which aims to give young people a chance to learn about community concerns and share their ideas with local officials.

She said she signed Executive Order No. 084 on August 12, which coincided with International Youth Day, to strengthen youth participation in city government and institutionalize the program.

“Ginapabaskog naton ang youth participation sa governance kay indi ko gusto nga ang kabataan mangin subject sang problema—gusto ko nga kamo mismo ang mangin kabahin sa solusyon,” Treñas said.

Treñas also encouraged young Ilonggos to bring their ideas to city hall, particularly those involving projects that could help their communities.

“May space para sa inyo sa government. May space para sa inyo ideas kag voices,” she said.

She cited the 27 organized youth associations in the city’s relocation and housing communities as an example of how young residents can become involved in community affairs.

Treñas said the city would need the energy and fresh ideas of the youth as it works on programs for Iloilo City.
