Cebu mayor: Heroism seen in everyday acts

Heroism is not limited to the sacrifices of historical figures, according to Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival, who urged residents to also recognize ordinary Filipinos doing their part in the community.

Archival made the statement during the city government’s observance of National Heroes’ Day on August 31 with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument at Plaza Sugbo.

“Heroism is found in our daily duty, in choosing to do what is right for our society, wherever we are called to serve,” Archival said.

He said acts of service do not always have to be extraordinary, pointing to workers and ordinary citizens who help keep communities safe, clean and functioning.

“Heroism isn’t just one massive historic moment, but a daily selfless action,” he added.

Archival cited street sweepers, police officers, media workers, digital creators, public servants, community leaders, scientists and other professionals whose everyday work contributes to their communities.

He also urged residents to practice simple acts of responsibility, including bringing their own tumblers to help reduce waste.

The wreath-laying ceremony was organized by the Cebu City Government through the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission.
