Cebu councilor pushes biodiesel ordinance to tackle waste, flooding

A proposed biodiesel ordinance could help Cebu City deal with used cooking oil and grease trap waste from local food establishments, according to City Councilor Mikel Rama.

Rama said he received a copy of the proposed measure from Atty. Gerard Joe Binghay Carillo and former Cebu City Councilor Atty. Gerardo Carillo.

The draft ordinance seeks to establish rules for the proper collection, recycling and disposal of used cooking oil and grease trap waste.

Rama said the proposal could help prevent waste from being improperly dumped into drainage systems, which can contribute to clogged waterways and flooding.

“By addressing improper waste disposal, this initiative will play a crucial role in preventing clogged drainage, mitigating floods, and protecting our environment,” Rama said in a Facebook post.

He thanked the two lawyers for taking the initiative and said the proposal could bring a sustainable benefit to Cebu City.

“I deeply appreciate their proactive proposal and the positive, sustainable impact this can bring to Cebu City,” he said.
