Indonesian haze hits W. Visayas

Residents in parts of Western Visayas are being urged to take precautions as haze from forest fires in Kalimantan, Indonesia reaches the region.

The haze, made up of very fine particles carried by the wind, could trigger coughing, throat irritation, chest discomfort and watery eyes, Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas warned.

Treñas said people with asthma and cardiovascular conditions face greater risk from exposure. She also urged senior citizens, pregnant women and those with existing respiratory and heart problems to wear face masks, preferably N95, when going outside.

Bacolod City Mayor Greg Gasataya likewise told residents to limit their exposure, particularly those considered vulnerable.

“Everyone is advised to keep doors and windows closed, avoid strenuous activities, and wear face masks outdoors,” Gasataya said.

Gasataya said Bacolod will continue checking air quality through its monitoring station in Barangay Alijis.

He also reminded residents to call the local 911 in case of an emergency.

The haze is linked to forest fires in Indonesia, with winds carrying smoke and fine particles across national borders into parts of the Philippines.
