Biliran Gov. Rogelio J. Espina is calling for a united effort to address the high cost and reliability of electricity in Biliran.
Espina raised the issue during the 38th Annual General Membership Assembly of the Biliran Electric Cooperative (BILECO), where he said electricity remains a major concern for households, businesses, farmers, fishermen, students and other consumers.
The governor acknowledged complaints over high electricity rates and said the concerns of Biliran consumers should be addressed through cooperation among BILECO, the provincial government, consumers and national agencies.
He explained that electricity rates are affected by several factors, including system losses, line rentals, power supply and other charges. The province’s geographic location also makes securing a stable and affordable power supply more difficult.
Espina said he was willing to help bring the concerns of Biliranons to national government agencies and Congress.
He also encouraged efforts to attract investments in renewable and sustainable energy sources, saying these could help improve the province’s energy security and reduce its dependence on power sources from outside Biliran.
The governor also cited the provincial government’s assistance to cooperatives through its Provincial Cooperative Office, including technical and information technology support.
Espina urged consumers to practice responsible electricity use while longer-term solutions are being pursued.
“Let us stand together, find solutions together, and work together for a more reliable, affordable, and sustainable power supply. A brighter future begins with our unity today,” he said.
