Benitez pushes farm-to-table plan for Bacolod

Bacolod City Rep. Albee Benitez is pushing a plan to strengthen the city’s tourism industry by promoting local food and farm products.

Benitez said tourism should not only focus on places and scenery but also on the food and experiences that Bacolod can offer.

He said the plan will include sustainable farm tourism, farm-to-table sourcing for restaurants and micro, small and medium enterprises, and crop contracting for high-value crops such as ube.

The programs are targeted for implementation within the next year, he said.

Benitez said the goal is to help local farmers earn more while ensuring that restaurants and businesses have a steady supply of fresh local products.

“Sa ulihi, indi lang naton ipatilaw ang sabor sang Bacolod, ipabugal naton ini sa bilog nga kalibutan. Kay kung ang aton lokal nga produkto mag-uswag, ang Bacolodnon ang una nga makabenepisyo,” Benitez said.

He said the initiative is being developed through the Slow Food Movement, in partnership with Florida State University and former Tourism Secretary Mina Gabor, who now chairs the International School of Sustainable Tourism Philippines.
